Working with Young People and Substance Use Training

Available in house.

The aim of the training is to examine the patterns and possible risks of substance use amongst young people, and to consider appropriate tools and interventions that can be used with this group.

Interventions for young people tend to centre on psychosocial counselling-based therapies, which attempt to address the underlying causes and the behavioural consequences of substance misuse. Use among young people needs to be seen in the context of the family environment, social pressures and emotional issues, to which young people are especially vulnerable. As such, treatment of young people requires a different approach to that of adults.

This training examines the nature of substance use by young people (defined as those under the age of 18) in light of current research. It will examine the issues of vulnerability and legality of young people engaging in substance use, and the services available to support them. It examines the screening, assessment and engagement of young substance users, introducing participants to the range of material and resources for working with this group.
