Hepatitis C and Injecting Drug Use, Pre and Post Test Counselling

Available in house.

This course can be taken as either a one or two day course. Day one examines the issues around Hepatitis C, and day two focuses upon pre and post test counselling, and setting up support groups. Current evidence suggests that between 50% and 80% of past and current of injecting drug users are hepatitis C positive, despite campaigns and awareness designed to prevent the spread of the disease. The hepatitis C virus is explained with reference to current research, discussing symptoms and disease progression. National prevalence and National Strategy is considered before a detailed examination of transmission routes with a focus upon injecting behaviour and high risk behaviour. Care pathways and patient support is also discussed. Day Two considers the testing process for hepatitis C and the topics that should be addressed in pre and post test counselling. Participants are invited to role play to practice skills. The training concludes with a brief overview of setting up support groups.
